Good morning and a happy new year from Star Trek Games! Before voting opens on the Player's Choice Awards there is time for a few quick community news bites to kick off the new year.
The Fleet Operations mod team have released the first patch for their awesome Armada II mod in rather short order. Included in the patch are bug fixes, gameplay balance tweaks and an overhauled AI! Download it now via their website.
Star Trek Engagement, the only nominee for Top Fan Created Game of 2008 has a new update adding new features to the space combat game. Thanks to Matress_of_evil you can find out all about it in this forum post.
For Legacy fans, the team behind Ultimate Universe, one of the most popular mods for the game have announced a version 1.5 will be released in January with new effects, ships and other features whilst overall development for version 2.0 continues. They have released a teaser video over at their site to check out.
Finally for players of the critically acclaimed 2008 space strategy Sins of a Solar Empire, be sure to check out the third preview release of Star Trek: Sacrifice
Fans of 4x type games are probably familiar with the 'X Universe' and the games that encompass it. For those who draw but a quizzical look to such an inquiry one could sum up the gameplay as so:
The basic premise is that players start out in a small, underpowered spaceship in a vast, hostile universe and through a variety of smart trading, combat, and knowing which races to suck up to and which to shoot at, eventually parlay that ship into a vast, mercantile empire. The ideal of this sort of game is to create a vast, open-ended universe that seems "alive." Economies will rise and fall in a realistic fashion and races will love or hate you depending on your actions with them. There's no "goal," and no "end," beyond what you as the player set for yourself.
Sounds a bit like Fallout3 in space. Shame such a game doesn't exist for fans of Star Trek. However where there is a will, there is a way! Enter one 'magrathean monkey' who has been working with the single-mindedness of a Gorn to bring Star Trek to the game. We've uploaded over 100 screenshots showing the work that he's done. Check out all the screenshots in our ... [Click to continue]
I thought some might find it interesting to check out the sites stats for 2008, compared to 2007, so I dialed up our Google Analytics and grabbed a shot. Unfortunately all of 2007 wasn't captured. Exactly what happened I'm not sure because I put GA on the site in 2006 or 2005, at least I think I did. Well anyway we have what we have so if your curious just click on the small image.
I don't pretend to make these numbers out to be anything special. They are what they are. Cryptic hasn't said word one to us if that tells you anything.
2009 marks our 10 year anniversary of supporting the Star Trek gaming community. You can imagine that over the course of 10 years we have accumulated a considerable amount of cruft. Pieces and parts of sites, efforts, and events are littered throught the site. If you know where to look you can find all kinds of things like this, this, this, this and a wholebunchmore.
In the past we had a large crew to helm the site, but over time this has dwindled down to just me. So I need to simplify, streamline, and just give the place a good cleaning. I also want to change the focus of the site to a degree and I believe doing this will help in that effort.
Probably the biggest change you'll see is a move to Wordpress to... [Click to continue]
Hey everyone, i'm sorry for my lack of posting here, but I thought I would notify everyone of some of the more recent updates that Supremacy has had.
Back in September, the game received an update that added in an auto-updater function; the game will now check for updates automatically every time you run the game, and notify you if an update is available. It will then download it for you (If you allow it to do so), then install it for you as well. The installation process requires the game to close - but it will then automatically reload itself!
When you load the game for the first time, please wait a few minutes on the menu screen to allow the auto-updater to check whether there are any game updates available.
In more recent news, the game received another update a few weeks ago that allows players to finally choose to play as any one of the five Empires, not just the United Federation of Planets. The other empires... [Click to continue]
Star Trek Enterprise: Temporal Cold War - Christmas Media Update
The development of the mod is going on slowly but steadily with most of the basic modelling and mapping tasks being done for the teaser demo currently in the works. At the moment, besides revamping some of the level props and character models, our dedicated modelling team is focusing on the remaining unfinished non-player characters. The mappers on the other hand are either optimizing the current versions of our beta maps or are busy planning the last remaining one that has not been produced yet. Thus, while there is only a handful of new content in these areas whose quality is worthy for a media release, our situation is fairly good in these areas of development.
On the other hand, there is much more to be done on the animating, voice acting and coding front. Cpangrace is very busy working on the weapon and character animations required for the teaser-demo, while the voice actors diligently keep recording their lines from the demo script.
Coding is however still the most problemful area of development. Even though one of our former coders (Graham alias Rickenbacker) has found time and returned to help us out a little in solving the awaiting programming tasks, we are still looking for additional assistance. So if you... [Click to continue]
Cryptic Studios has given us a present for Christmas
Exploration vessel; Commissioned: 2409
A starship designed to carry Federation influence throughout the Alpha Quadrant and beyond, the NX-91001 is one of the first multi-role starship designs since the Sovereign class was commissioned in the early 2370s. Able to function as a deep-space explorer with extensive sensors and laboratory facilities for scientific research, the NX-91001 also is outfitted as a heavy cruiser armed with some of the latest in Starfleet weapons technology for deployment in hostile areas.
The NX-91001 contains the best of the new technologies developed in the past 40 years. Bioneural circuitry mimics organic neurons, speeding data functions and improving computer performance. An advanced sensor pod can be operated from the bridge or manned directly for intense sweeps, and includes telemetric observation VISOR technology to allow a science officer to interface directly with data transmitted by a robotic exo-probe.
A holoemitter array system allows Emergency Medical and Emergency Command Holograms to operate throughout the ship when needed, and the ship is equipped with a Class 10 warp drive for normal operation and an advanced hyper... [Click to continue]
An early Christmas present for everyone, Aftermath Add-on Pack C is now ready for download!!
Our largest add-on yet (they keep getting bigger), Pack C contains alot of new material to enter Aftermath. First up we have the first extensive overhaul of the ships starting with the TOS/TMP era's for all races. These changes not only affect all ships of that era, but also their weaponry has changed to provide a more challanging yet balanced battles throughout all areas of Aftermath.
Another new area introduced into Aftermath are new ships. Yes finally after well over a year we will start putting ships into Aftermath. All the ships that get placed in will come from Max Loef and will be fine tuned by Dontdrunkimshoot so they fit properly into Aftermath. For the first new additions, we have the Constant, Curry and Trident class ships available. Also included are model updates for the Proxima Refit, Miranda Refit and Akyazi class ships.
A common recurring feature among action shooter titles in the current generation is co-operative play. An all new element is added by breaking down the barriers between single player and multiplayer experiences and gamers now expect to be able to play through the story with a friend online, especially in squad based games as seen most recently in titles like Gears of War 2 and Call of Duty: World at War.
Rewind back to 2003, and the last Star Trek shooter released, Star Trek: Elite Force II. Completing missions as part of the Enterprise's Hazard Team, you fought alongside AI controlled characters. Now however, thanks to the talents of Chrisstrahl of the Darkmatter Clan you can add EF2 to the list of games you can play co-operatively.
Work has been made to the HazardModding Co-Op Script mod for quite some time, but now version 4.0 has been released with the following features:
Play instantly, no downloads required to join a Co-Op Mod Server
Go trough six Single-player Missions and all six Secret-Levels, together with up to 7 Buddy's companying you
Take the Challenge of the heavy Last Man Standing Modifier, and resurrect fallen Team-mates by collecting Golden Starships
Trivia challenge time! What is the connection between the following video and Star Trek Armada I/II? There may be more then one, but I'm looking for one in particular. Can you figure it out?
The Latest Installment of The Path to 2409 is released. The year that is covered is 2383. Enjoy.
Starfleet Intelligence continues to gather reports of unrest on Romulus. Praetor Tal’aura enacts food rationing and strict limits on replicator use on the homeworld, saying that the empire’s resources must be reserved to support the military’s campaign against Donatra and the breakaway Imperial Romulan State.
The shortages spark rioting in the capitol of Ki Baratan, and the struggle goes on for two days before the praetor orders troops to intervene. Observers on Romulus suggest that as many as 2,000 people could have died either in the initial riots or at the hands of Romulan troops.
The civil unrest and resistance from Romulan nobles strain Tal’aura’s command of the empire. She calls upon her allies in the Senate to help in stabilizing the government, and they respond by voting to expand the praetor’s powers, giving Tal’aura the power to grant or remove noble titles, which previously was a privilege that only the emperor enjoyed. She also is granted the ability to declare war without Senate approval.
Ambassador Spock returns to Romulus to take his place with the Unificationists. Leaders of the movement say that although they could not win the support of the Federation, they will continue to “wage
As I've already introduced in the 2008 player awards thread, I'll give a quick presentation of what ST:E already is and projectedly will be.
First of all it is a self-written stand-alone 3D combat game where you can set up all types of fleets and fight out melee combats against the computer. Later-on there'll hopefully be a mission scripting system and campaigns but first network capabilities have to be implemented in order to play against human players. In its current stage, a decent maneuvring AI is also lacking so enemy ships are only set on self-defense but you can give both fleets orders that they will follow so it's more about playing against yourself in this pre-release version .
The team behind Fleet Operations, the highly successful modification for Star Trek Armada II have just released the highly anticipated 3.0 version of their mod!
For the uninitiated, Fleet Operations fully overhauls the base game, adding stunning new graphics, models and effects but more importantly, a whole new playing style to game with all new gameplay dynamics, resource system, unit abilities and and specialities that update Armada II to sit alongside other more recent RTS releases. Included within this release are the Federation, Klingon and Romulan Empires, Dominion and the Borg.
The team have also revealed that future updates to the mod will be made in smaller, more frequent add-ons so keep your eyes peeled on their website for further news and updates.
Be sure to download this mod right away by visiting this page for download links. Congratulations to Doca Cola, Optec and the team!
Many thanks to k_merse and Jan for the prompt heads up!
