Star Trek Online Introduces 2384
Suzie Ford posted on 1 Jan 2009 13:30

Continuing to close the gap between the known Star Trek universe and the new one to be featured in Star Trek Online, Cryptic Studios has updated their lore book with "Path to 2409: 2384". Check it out:

Federation analysts say that a shakeup in the Romulan power structure has left the empire vulnerable to attack from within and without. Starfleet is dispatching additional ships to the border of the Neutral Zone and considers the Romulan situation one of the main threats to Federation safety and security.

Activision - Blizzard possibly set to step back into Trek Gaming
Posted by - Victor1st  on 02.01.09

A little over 3 weeks ago in a flyer newsletter sent by Game (thats the name of the UK store...Game...how original >.<) an announcement was made which simply said it might "perk the interest of sci-fi gamers".

Today in a short newsletter news from Game suggested that Activison - Blizzard may release the block on Activision's former Star Trek titles and re-publish them...ALL of them as box set's with two to three games in each set dating back to the early games from the late 90's up to and including their last Star Trek game of the franchise Star Trek: Elite Force II.

This news is hardly surprising since the lawsuit which basically blocked Activision from publishing their own old trek titles has meant that 3rd party publishers have been tajing the cream off the top of the old star trek titles by means of "by pass publishing" in which small start up companies get the license to print run hundreds of copies of the original game and re-release them under their own label...a loop hole which is soon to be closed in the gaming industry.

With the merger of Activision and Vivendi last year turning the company into Activision - Blizzard it means the original constraints are no longer applicable.

More news about this when it comes in.

World.com Sues all MMOs

This happened Christmas Eve to NCSoft.

world.com

Quote:
90's virtual world developers Worlds.com has fired the first shot in what could be a game company-spanning battle as they file suit against NCsoft for infringing on their patent for multiplayer virtual environments.

The patent at question is 7,181,690, "System and Method for Enabling Users to Interact in a Virtual Space", which was file in August of 2000 and finally issued in February of last year. Reading over the patent, it basically covers the client/server-based system every single MMO on the market uses to allow multiple players to view and interact with each other in a virtual world. The suit, filed on Christmas Eve, claims that NCsoft has infringed on this patent across all of its MMO titles, from City of Heroes to Guild Wars to Dungeon Runners. After reading over the patent, it looks like they've actually got a pretty solid case on their hands.

Worlds seeks damages from NCsoft, as well as assurances that the MMO publisher will not infringe on their second patent, 6,219,045 - "Scalable Virtual World Chat Client-Server System".

Mark my words here - NCsoft is just the beginning. Their patent pretty much covers every instance where users with avatars interact in a virtual space. From Second Life to World of Warcraft, PlayStation Home to Anarchy Online; everything massively online and multiplayer falls under this patent.

I wonder what this will do for Star Trek Online?

Site outages and downtime

As some of you may know there was some downtime latley with the Star Trek and Stargate site.

One of the harddrives that holds the bulk of the files had a hissy fit and decided not to play anymore but the backup's managed to save the site. Its the second time a drive has went down on the site in the past 6 months, we seem to be chewing out drives at a fast rate >.<

During the week between Christmas Day and New Years Eve the site will be periodically down late evening/early morning GMT as some files get moved out of the STG to backup the entire drive locally. Local backups of this site are always a pain and when moving databases its always safer to close down everything that uses the database.

The video site will be down for a little while longer as well as a folder that holds all the php stuff to run the thing totally vanished from the local root folder...its like socks in the washing machine, ya know it was there cause ya put it in, but sometimes the machines get hungry and eat folders/socks/gerbils....etc frown

2009 sees the tenth anniversary of the STG, im gonna try and at least get the biggest proportion of the site all working at the same time when the anniversary hits in March...lol!
